What a lovely first week of school! Miss K and I were so happy to welcome our returning second and third graders to Room 114 and begin to meet our first graders. We will be spending time over the first weeks getting to know one another to learn about our unique identities, interests, learning styles and needs, and backgrounds. Through this work, children begin to recognize our similarities and differences as we build our learning community together. We began our week on Tuesday with the routines and procedures of our Morning Meeting. Children participated in a variety of games that invited them to share their interests and more information about themselves. We began to build public speaking skills that will be utilized each day. During our Work Cycle, children will be learning how to use materials and build work stamina through projects that aim to celebrate who they are as individuals. We studied the art of Maya Christine Gonzalez and how she created a self-portrait and poem that represented who she is. Children created classroom maps indicating the Montessori materials that sparked their interest. We read a variety of texts that introduced the concept of a Name Story, one which the children will be writing this upcoming week. We began to discuss the role of freedom in our room and the role of responsibility. Children learned about the personal freedoms that they have and how they can be responsible in the room to show they care about themselves, others, and the classroom environment. We are very excited for next week to finish our projects and continue to learn more about each other!
